4. Current State Analysis

A concurrent step to this process is to analyse the business divisions' current operational model, which is impacted by the change. Understanding the current or as-is process is an essential task in the requirements elicitation process. Understanding the current process(es) enables business analysts not only with knowledge of the current process(es) but also why and how of the current process(es). This awareness helps untangle the web of whys and how’s and supports a better elicitation and articulation of the requirements.

On the back of this awareness of the as-is process(es), a business analyst can iterate through the requirements to validate the original assumptions and refresh them. This activity ensures more reliable requirement coverage. It also helps to define the future scope of work. A business requirement translates into multiple downstream requirements. Any unidentified gaps during elicitation of the business requirement may prove costly if that remains unnoticed or identified too late in the execution process.
